What are the goals of CTA?

  • The preservation and conservation of the cultural resources of Texas.
  • The promotion and coordination of communication and cooperation within the archeological community.
  • The promotion and distribution of information which enhances public awareness of the limited and nonrenewable nature of our cultural resources.

How does CTA support the professional community?

CTA Newsletter - CTA publishes a newsletter which keeps Texas professionals up-to-date with legislation, new methodologies and relevant information.

CTA Meetings - CTA hosts two meetings a year with presentations, workshops and committee reports to assist the professional community.

CTA Archeological Guidelines - CTA publishes the Guidelines for Texas Archeology. Copies can be purchased from the Secretary-Treasurer, Marie Archambeault

CTA Contractors List - CTA maintains a list of the professional archeological contractors who work in Texas. This list is distributed on request through the Texas Historical Commission. Firms and individuals on the list must be members of CTA and pay a contractor listing fee.

CTA Accreditation and Review Council - CTA Accreditation and Review Council (ARC) — ARC reviews and recommends changes (as needed) to the CTA Archeological Curation Guidelines. This five member council oversees the only archeological accreditation program for repositories and museums in Texas. For more information, contact Patricia A. Clabaugh, Chair at Texas A&M University or Carolyn Spock, Secretary-Treasurer at the University of Texas.

CTA Multicultural Relations Committee - CTA has established an "informal"committee to develop ways to build working relationships between Native Americans in Texas and CTA. This committee's goal is to foster positive working relationships between archeologists and all ethnic groups whose cultures we study. To this end we will target minority students for recruitment, sponsor research projects, and provide speakers for high school and college presentations. For more information, please contact Committee Chair Mary Jo Galindo at 512/416-2638 or mgalind@dot.state.tx.us

CTA Governmental Affairs - The Governmental Affairs Committee monitors official agreements, actions and legislation at the local, state, and federal levels, as they affect archeological practice in Texas. This information is conveyed to the membership through the Newsletter, the CTA website, and by reports at bi-annual meetings.  For questions, or to report changes in policy or legislation, Committee Chair Rachel Feit can be contacted at rfeit@hicksenv.com.

CTA Survey Committee - CTA has established a committee to develop standards for conducting surveys in each region of Texas.

For additional information see CTA Committees.
